My name is Kathy Rustell and I am the creator of Dan the Gardener and Friends, which was inspired by my family. The main characters – Dan The Gardener, Recycle Michael and Jennifer Pickles are based on my children and share many of their traits.

Dan the Gardener is based on my son Daniel who has always had green fingers. He was always planting things and watching them grow from an early age and this has been the main inspiration for the whole concept. Daniel has now gone through university studying the environment, conservation, plants and fungi.

Recycle Michael is based on my son Michael whose fascination with building, recycling and reusing products has led him to become a civil engineer specializing in sustainable building design.

Jennifer Pickles is based on my daughter Jennifer whose ability to organize others has led her to study Events Management at university
