Games To Play In The Car
Great Travel Games For Long Car Rides
Traveling cross country often entails periods of excitement, separated by long, boring stretches of land. There are a few games designed to occupy time and keep the whole family engaged. While many board games come in travel sizes for just this purpose, these games require no such purchases.
The License Plate Game
If your family is driving on the interstate or the turnpike, you are likely going to encounter drivers from all over the country. Before leaving, make a list or print one out of all the license plates in the country and then use this as a check list for plates you encounter during the drive. Players may also keep track of the color combinations on the plates.
The Alphabet Game
This is an age old stand by, as players try to find each letter in the alphabet, in order, on signs and license plates as you drive through the countryside. Some letters, like A, E, and T come very easily, while other letters like Q and Z may take some time to find. If you are competing with one another, you will have to devise rules like when you see a letter, you must call it out so that others ca verify it.
Roadside Poker
This is a game that will be most fun if you will be driving through farmland and some residential areas. The rules can change according to what is most fitting for your family and situation. A point system is developed and the two sides of the car play against one another. You can set it up something like this:
• Horses are worth 10 points.
• Cows are worth 5 points.
• Dogs are worth 15 points.
• A cat in the window is worth 35 points.
• See a sheep and you lose all of your points.
Decide ahead of time what your point system will look like and how many points win the game.
The Category Game
Each person in the car takes a turn coming up with a category. It might be mammals, Star Wars, food, or whatever appeals to you, but it should be a broad category. Each person takes turn coming up with words that go in that category, in alphabetical order. The first person must come up with a word that starts with A, the next B, and so on. When you reach the end of the alphabet, the next person comes up with a category.
