Great After School Snacks
Great After School Snacks
There is that magical time right after school when it is too early for a snack to spoil your dinner. This is a time when you can relax a little; you may be alone while your parents are still at work, or you may be kicking back with friends or siblings. At times like these, you want a snack that’s fun and tasty and that will give you the energy to enjoy your evening.
Banana Tortillas
A great way to fill up that empty spot in your stomach and keep your mom happy about your healthy eating is to enjoy a banana tortilla. These are easy to make, substantially filling, and really, really good. Spread a flour tortilla with a thin layer of peanut butter. Add a little jelly if you wish, but not too much or your snack will be drippy. Then peel a banana and lay the banana on the edge of your tortilla. Wrap the tortilla around the banana and enjoy with a glass of juice or milk.
Fruit Smoothie
Smoothies are great because they are sweet without the added sugar. There are a lot of ways to make a fruit smoothie. One great way is to make it ahead. Work with your parents to freeze berries, peaches, and bananas, or you can buy them frozen at the grocery store. Before school, put ¼ cup of milk, ¼ cup plain yogurt, and ¼ cup each of three different fruits in a blender and put it in the refrigerator. When you get home, the fruit will have thawed just enough to blend. Blend your smoothie on medium for 2 to 3 minutes, until the texture is thick and smooth. Pour into a glass and enjoy.
Party Mix or Trail Mix
This is another great after school snack you will want to make ahead. When you decide what you want in your mix, think about the taste mix you would like to have along with what nutrients the various ingredients would have to offer. Most mixes have a base of nuts, which add fiber and protein. These may be almonds, cashews, peanuts, or even walnuts or pecans. To this, add a dried fruit, like raisins, cranberries, or blueberries for added fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants, as well as a delicious sweet flavor. Yogurt covered raisins will add a touch of texture and a little calcium. Other great additions include M&M’s, sunflower seeds, goldfish style crackers, or Cheerios.
