Ideas on Dressing Up Your Pumpkin
Pumpkins are the mark of not only Halloween but of autumn as well. Just seeing a fully grown pumpkin patch or a mound of orange gourds for sale brings back memories of cooler weather, gorgeous leaves, thick soups and the canning of vegetables. If you feel as though you have been using the same old pumpkin designs year after year, then it’s time to shake things up a bit.
Many parents and children feel like they need something a little bit different than a plan old jack o’lantern. If this sounds like your family then rest assured that there are some really cool and creative ways to make some Halloween decorations using your pumpkin. It takes a bit of carving, some accessories, and a whole lot of imagination and you will surely have the coolest and most memorable pumpkin around.
Super Hero to the Rescue
Do you have a little boy or girl that is obsessed with superheroes? This is so common with the latest superhero movies that have hit theaters. It’s always a popular theme and therefore it can be fun to dress your pumpkin up as one. You can go for either a normal face that you carve out or add any special features that your particular superhero may have. Then it’s time to really dress things up and go for a cape, a mask or a headpiece to make your superhero recognizable. You can even let their creativity run wild if they would rather create their own superhero as they go. Be sure that you add in plenty of color with the accessories through some pumpkin paint and you have yourself a true pumpkin superhero!
All Decked Out
Do you have a little girl that is obsessed with playing dress up? Most parents of little girls tend to go through this phase and it’s a fun one. What better way for them to show off their creativity with playing dress up than with the family pumpkin? This is a great way to allow them to dress something else up besides you or themselves for a change. Let them get out the makeup or perhaps some pumpkin paint for a better effect. You can put on a crown and a boa or a princess tiara and matching necklace. Be sure that you get a longer or even oval shaped pumpkin so that it’s conducive to this type of dressing up. They will create their own little masterpiece and you will be proud to display it with glee!
All About Accessories
If you want to let your kids have their hands at accessorizing, then put out the little pieces and parts and let them go wild with their pumpkin. This can work well for either boys or girls and is a fun and creative way of letting them dress up their pumpkin. Put out glitter, puffy paint, stickers, pumpkin paint, stencils to trace, jewelry, hats, scarves, and anything else you can get your hands out. There are no rules for this one–but watch as your little girl turns it into a pretty pumpkin lady and your little boy turns it into a stickered, glued, overdone work of art! This is what dressing up a pumpkin is all about and it shows that you don’t always have to just trace over a pattern to get something that looks super cool.
Spiders, Spiders, Everywhere
This takes a classic theme like a spider and turns it upside down and inside out. You can trace out and carve a spider but then you get a bit whacky with the dressing up. First be sure that you leave an opening for a mouth on the spider that you carve and then you can have a bunch of little plastic spiders spilling out for a fun and creepy effect. Then you can drape it in black, paint on some black accents, and then surround it by all sizes and shapes of different plastic spiders. Don’t forget to surround the pumpkin with cobwebs! This is fun and creepy and works for all ages and interests!
The Scariest Pumpkin on the Block
If your child is all about the scary part of Halloween then this can work well. It’s all about gore, guts, and scary things to shake this pumpkin up. You can start with a stencil for a vampire or zombie or just go at it on your own. Then you want to leave an open mouth that you can make something disgusting come out of like bugs or even what they ate for lunch! Then it’s time to move onto the gruesome makeup and that’s where you have some fun painting on scars, blood, and deformations. If you’re having a Halloween party, make a couple variations and place them in a faux pumpkin patch in your house or front yard – heck, if you have a real pumpkin patch, chop off the vines and create a display with them. The kids will just love this as it’s disgusting and scary and there is no limit to how creepy they make it. Let them get the scary Halloween out of their systems and have a blast with this type of pumpkin!
