Word Games For Kids
Word Games You Can Play Anywhere
There are so many times when you must create your own fun. When you are traveling in a car, train, or plane; when you are standing in line; or even when you are on the bus riding home from school, there are word games you can play that require no board, no pieces, nothing but your ingenuity and brain power. These word games can make the time fly by.
Beginning And Ending Letters
Take turns choosing a category, like food, animals, or even celebrities. The first play chooses a word that fits in the category, like “monkey.” The next player must come up with a word from that category that begins with the last letter of that word. The next player may say, “yak,” in which case it is the task of the next person to think of an appropriate word that starts with the letter, “k.” Play continues until no one can think of anything else.
Simon
You may remember the electronic game, Simon, which was very popular in the 1980’s. The game had four lights in four different colors, and you were required to repeat the patterns. This can be construed into a word game as well. The players decide on a category, like food. The first player chooses a word in the category, like “meatballs.” The next person says, “meatballs, strawberries.” The next player must name these two and add a third: “meatballs, strawberries, crackers,” and so on. Depending on how many people are playing, you may have a player go “out” when they lose track, or the game may end and you can start another. Be sure to choose a broad category.
Who Am I?
This is a lot like 20 Questions. One player chooses a celebrity, historical figure, or someone else everyone else will know. Players take turns asking yes and no questions until someone guesses who that player is. The person who guesses gets to choose who they are next.
Tell A Story
There is no telling where this game will take you. The first player starts a story. He or she may say something like, “It seemed like a normal day at Howard Elementary School.” The next person adds a sentence. They may say, “Then the sky turned dark.” This is fun because each player will have a different idea about where the story should go, and the resulting story will be creative, and often hilarious.
